Brock Grisham: The Company You Keep: Barack Hussein Obama

The Company You Keep: Barack Hussein Obama

Before I start, let me disclose that I voted for the other guy. If you
didn’t, that’s fine: I respect your choice and your vote. Many of us
fought for that right, many others died. Thank you for taking the time
to exercise that freedom.

I enjoy having a bi-racial president. The media machine would have you
believe that no Caucasian on earth would ever vote for the guy because
of his skin color. It’s refreshing to prove so many people wrong. That
being said, I know a number of people that voted for the guy because of
his skin color. It just goes to show, that the more things change…
you know the rest.

So when do we start treating people like people? It’s difficult to get
past race when it’s constantly the topic at hand. Is Obama “The
President” or “The Black President”? This election emphasized the great
divide we continue to force upon ourselves as a nation. Shame on those
individuals who continue to define others by their race! If I’m not
mistaken, there was a successful movement against this in the mid
1900’s, yet here we are again. Real racial change can never be achieved
by looking at another person as a race.

Two distinct groups of malicious malcontents stir this pot at every
opportunity, and our society allows it. The same freedom that ensures
your right to vote, ensures their continued existence. Both these
collective coalitions continue to live in the 60’s: one group in the
1860’s, the other in the 1960’s. Neither serves any useful purpose in
modern society, despite their best attempts to justify their own
existence. Yet they thrive because we invite them into our homes every
evening at 6:30 Eastern Standard Time.

The 1860’s are kept alive through the overt spread of fear perpetrated
by a bastardly band of brothers. While history does not equal hate;
terror and violence do. Do you recall the name “David Duke”? What comes
to mind; his service as a Louisiana State Representative or his
leadership of the Ku Klux Klan? David Duke will forever be judged by
the clannish company he keeps, regardless of anything else he may
accomplish in life. While we all have our own beliefs and prejudices, at
the end of the day, we are a product of the company we keep.

On the other hand, it’s ironic that we’ve had minorities serve as the
Secretary of State and the Chairman of the Joint Chief’s. Why ironic?
Because nary a peep was heard from the 1960’s pity party over these
historic figures and their subsequent accomplishments. What could have
been a beacon to an entire generation was shunned by those advocating
such advancement. Neither Condoleezza Rice nor Colin Powell chose to
keep company with these hate mongers, instead being aligned with
majority-America. While they paid a historic price for this
disassociation, they defined themselves by their own accomplishments and
the conventional company they kept.

To this end, the President will also be judged by the company he keeps,
not necessarily his accomplishments. This remains the standard by which
all public officials are remembered, including previous administrations:
Bush & Rove, Cheney & Halliburton, Clinton & Monica, Crocket & Tubbs -
you get the picture. One can only hope that this President will
continue to distance himself from the likes of Rev Wright, William Ayers
and Gov Blagojevich.

Is this the change we can believe in?
