Health: Merck Denied By FDA

In today’s excellent blog by Michele Cagan at HSI Baltimore, among the many interesting stories posted is the good news that the FDA is sticking to their guns in denying Merck’s request (again) to allow over the counter sales of Mevacor, a powerful statin drug.

Jenny Thompson puts the Merck request in it’s proper perspective,

“…. there are many OTC medications that make sense: mild painkillers, because you can tell when you’re in pain…decongestants, because you can tell when you have a stuffy nose. But you can not possibly know if you have high cholesterol without a visit to the doctor.”
