NY Gov Spitzer gives up on crazy illegal immigration license plan

Well, thank God for common sense. New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has given up on his crazy plan to give illegal immigrants driver’s license’s in New York State.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer will withdraw his controversial plan to grant driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants during a meeting Wednesday morning with the state’s congressional delegation in the Capitol, a Spitzer spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday night.

Spitzer’s plan called for giving driver’s license’s to illegal immigrants to get them “out of the shadows”. This plan had so many flaws that it’s impossible to go over them all!

First of all, the key word in this argument is “ILLEGAL”! The people he wanted to give state issued id’s to are not even supposed to be in this country. The logic behind this is so insane that I can’t even describe it.

Second of all, this would have made a New York State driver’s license basically worthless when it came to doing anything outside of the state. Such as getting on an airplane! We would have had to use our passports when flying anywhere within the United States, which of course is crazy. Of course Spitzer said this wouldn’t happen because there was going to be different types of license’s given out, but everyone knows that would not have happened.

The third problem would have been a huge national security risk. Sure, let’s give illegal immigrants driver’s license’s. Thats a great idea. Every terrorist in the world would have been trying to get a New York State driver’s license!

The sick part about this whole plan was that 70% of the state opposed it.

About 70 percent of New Yorkers oppose the license plan, according to a Siena College poll of 625 registered state voters released Tuesday. The poll, conducted Nov. 5-8, had a sampling margin of 3.9 percentage points.

But, Spitzer still barreled ahead with the plan until it started unraveling last week with the whole Hillary Clinton, can’t answer yes or no on the illegal driver’s license plan. This was starting to become a rallying point against the Democrats in recent weeks and was going to become a big issue with the Presidential election coming up in 2008.

The move comes as Spitzer faced mounting pressure from Democrats and Mayor Michael Bloomberg to drop the plan, which has provoked a huge public backlash and given Republicans a weapon against Spitzer’s allies — especially Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Once again, thank god for common sense and his political allies telling him to stand down on this issue! This could have been disastrous if this really happened. We’re supposed to be trying to curb illegal immigration. Not, make it easier for them to live their lives normally.
