According to the Des Moines Register, Mitt Romney is still leading in the latest Iowa poll. However, the interesting part is that Fred Thompson has taken over 2nd place from Rudy Guiliani.
Romney does still have some problems:
But criticism of Romney as a politician who changes positions on key issues, rather than sticking to his convictions, appears to have had an impact. Among likely caucus participants whose first choice is someone other than Romney, 51 percent say his shifting of positions on issues like abortion is a major factor in not supporting him.
Fred Thompson seems to be resonating with voters. He’s only officially been in the race for over a month but, he seems to be someone who could take over the race, with Republican voters seemingly looking for anyone to step up and run with this.
Thompson, in jumping into the race at second place in Iowa, runs nearly even with Romney among middle-aged caucusgoers, between the ages of 45 and 64.
Another plus for Thompson is that 10 percent of the supporters of other candidates would seriously consider him and an additional 53 percent might consider him if they knew more about him. Those are better marks than any other candidate received.
Des Moines retiree Mark Taylor, 76, gives the edge to Thompson over Giuliani but thinks both are capable of bringing the country together.
Thompson “wants to get a handle on spending. I don’t feel that the government is the answer to everybody’s problem,” Taylor said. “I feel like Giuliani would be a good president. I think he would get our taxes under control.”
